Tree Removal Cost Calculator for NZ

Estimate tree removal, trimming, and stump grinding costs based on tree size, site access, and how many trees need work. Useful for budgeting before you call an arborist, or for arborists sense-checking a quote against typical market rates.

What Drives Tree Removal Pricing in NZ

  • Tree size — the single biggest factor. A small ornamental tree might take an hour; a mature 20m pine can be a full day's work for a crew.
  • Access — open sections with truck access are cheapest. Trees hard against a house, over a fence, or near power lines usually need to be dismantled by hand in sections, which takes much longer.
  • Species and wood density — hardwoods and large pines are slower to cut and haul than softer, smaller species.
  • Disposal — chipping and removing the debris (vs. leaving it for the homeowner to deal with) adds cost but is usually worth it.

Choosing an Arborist

  • Look for NZ Arboricultural Association (NZAA) certification or ISA credentials.
  • Confirm they carry public liability insurance (minimum $1M) — tree work near houses/fences is genuinely risky.
  • Get quotes in writing that clearly state whether clean-up and chip removal are included.
  • For anything protected or near boundaries/services, confirm they'll check council consent status before starting.
